A week across Malta and Gozo

A week gives you the option to slow down and spend time on both islands. The suggested split below is a framework, not a set of timed bookings.

Plan your visit

Suggested planning scope below. Use the official links for current bookings, services and access.

Suggested time or scope
A week with space for both islands, rather than seven packed day trips.
Route or planning approach
Plan the change of base and ferry terminals before booking the two stays.
Budget considerations
Include transfer costs and the practical cost of moving luggage.
Access & comfort
Check accommodation, boarding and the intended routes on both islands.

A practical starting plan

  1. 01

    Days 1–3: settle into Malta

Use culture, an inland day and a harbour or southern theme as the first anchors.

  2. 02

    Days 4–5: a Gozo stay

Allow time for crossing and check-in, then choose Victoria and one coast.

  3. 03

    Days 6–7: return with room

Keep a buffer before the flight and use the remaining time for a favourite place or flexible outing.

Days one to three: a Malta base

Use the first three full days for Valletta, Mdina with Rabat, and a harbour or southern coast day. Choose one main theme each day and group nearby places. Let your arrival time determine whether the first evening is only a local walk. Avoid making the week begin with a tightly timed attraction after a flight.

Days four and five: stay on Gozo

An overnight change of base lets you see Victoria and the Citadel, then choose a coastline such as Dwejra or a bay day. Give the crossing and check-in their own time. Two days do not need to include every Gozo landmark; a village meal and a repeated favourite view can be part of the value of staying.

Days six and seven: return with room

Return to Malta with enough margin before your flight and use the remaining time for a beach, a museum or somewhere you want to revisit. Check the actual ferry and transfer arrangements before booking accommodation. If moving bases feels tiring, choose a single-island stay and use the extra days for a slower version of the same places.

Carry the smallest practical island bag

For a short Gozo stay, reducing luggage can simplify boarding and the final walk to accommodation. Do not assume you can leave large bags at a property; ask about storage and its terms. Pack documents, medication, chargers and essentials where you can reach them during the transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Must I move accommodation?

No. The itinerary is a framework. If changing bases feels tiring, choose one island for a deeper stay or keep the Gozo visit small enough for a comfortable day trip.

Why return to Malta before the final flight day?

A buffer reduces dependence on an exact island crossing. Choose a margin that suits your flight and risk tolerance rather than assuming the ferry and onward journey will be seamless.

How much should I book in advance?

Book accommodation and important timed activities, then keep ordinary sightseeing days flexible. Review the complete travel chain before making a booking that depends on several connections.
