Three days in Malta: a flexible first-visit itinerary
This plan assumes three full exploring days. Arrival and departure can reduce those days considerably, so shorten the route before adding timed bookings.

Plan your visit
Suggested planning scope below. Use the official links for current bookings, services and access.
- Suggested time or scope
- Three full exploring days, plus travel-day adjustments.
- Route or planning approach
- Group one area per day and check your actual base.
- Budget considerations
- One main paid interior per day may be enough.
- Access & comfort
- Adapt each walking route and keep a shorter version.
A practical starting plan
- 01
Anchor the city day
Valletta with one chosen interior.
- 02
Keep the inland pair
Mdina and Rabat together.
- 03
Choose a final theme
Coast, harbour towns or a carefully planned island excursion.
Day one: Valletta and the harbour setting
Begin with a public viewpoint, walk the street grid and choose one cultural interior. Make lunch a real pause. A harbour crossing is an optional extension rather than a requirement; decide from energy, the actual return service and whether it would improve the day.
Day two: Mdina and Rabat
Pair the old city with Rabat, choosing a small number of lanes, a bastion view and one heritage subject. A bakery stop can be enough for lunch. Keep the focus inland instead of placing a distant beach between the two places. They work well because they are a coherent area.
Day three: choose the contrast you want
Use the final day for a southern harbour town, a coast visit or the Three Cities. Choose a Gozo excursion instead only if that is a priority and you accept the crossing time. When this is also departure day, make the final outing smaller and keep the airport journey comfortable.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add Comino and Gozo?
Only by dropping substantial time elsewhere. Pick the excursion you most want rather than squeezing two crossings into a short introduction.
Should all three days be fixed in order?
Keep outdoor days interchangeable and work around genuinely important timed entries.
What if my flight uses half of day three?
Treat that as a smaller local outing, not a full third day. Preserve time for luggage and the airport.
