Gozo · THE EVERGREEN COLLECTION
Gozo’s salt pans: a working coastal landscape
The northern salt-pan landscape is visually striking, but it is also connected to production and private working areas.

Plan your visit
Suggested planning scope below. Use the official links for current bookings, services and access.
- Suggested time or scope
- A short coast visit or part of a modest northern-Gozo afternoon.
- Route or planning approach
- Identify the particular public viewpoint or route near Xwejni; avoid routing into working areas.
- Budget considerations
- Browsing the landscape is separate from buying locally produced salt.
- Access & comfort
- Uneven rock, passing traffic and exposed shore can affect the route.
A practical starting plan
- 01
Look from an established route
Notice the pattern of pans without entering them.
- 02
Ask about production
If a seller is available, ask where the product was made and how it should be stored.
- 03
Continue modestly
Add a nearby break or village rather than a long exposed circuit by default.
Observe from a respectful distance
Look at how the shallow shapes follow the coast and change with light and water. Stay on established public routes, respect barriers and signs, and do not walk into pans to get a photograph. The absence of a fence is not permission to enter. Keep children close where rock, water and working spaces meet.
Ask about the product
If you encounter a producer or shop, ask where the salt was made and how to store it. A small food souvenir can carry more meaning when you understand the process. Do not interrupt work for a demonstration, and do not assume salt sitting in a pan is free to collect. Check destination-country food rules before carrying purchases home.
Build a northern coast afternoon
Combine a modest coast walk with a village or waterfront meal, allowing for the weather and terrain. Carry water and avoid exposed edges, especially in rough conditions. A scenic road does not necessarily provide a safe pedestrian route for its whole length; inspect your intended walk and turn back when conditions or access are unclear.
A photograph with a useful story
Look for how the pans fit the shoreline and how water and light change their appearance. Including the wider coast can show more than stepping close to a single pan. If someone is working, ask before making them the main subject and do not interrupt the process for a demonstration.
Frequently asked questions
May I walk inside the salt pans?
Do not treat them as a public photo platform. Respect signs, boundaries and working areas even when there is no fence.
Can I collect salt myself?
Do not take material from working pans. Buy from a legitimate seller if you want salt to take home and ask about its origin.
Is this a good place for a long walk?
Only after checking a specific public route. A scenic coast road does not necessarily provide a suitable pedestrian route for its full length.
